Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well, really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I learned to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my lips but Hallelujah
Baby, I've been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor.
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch,
But love is not some kind of victory march,
No it's a cold and it's a very broken Hallelujah.
There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below,
but now you never show it to me, do you?
I remember when I moved in you,
And the holy dove was moving too,
and every breath we drew was Hallelujah.
Now maybe there's a God above,
As for me, all I ever learned from love
Is how to shoot at someone who outdrew you.
And it's no complaint you hear tonight,
and It's not some pilgrim who's seen the light
it's a cold and it's a very lonely Hallelujah.

I love this song....I have been tossing around in my head about somehow incorporating this into a sermon....
yeah -- one of my favourite songs too, love it!
it would be interesting to know more about Leonard Cohen's spiritual journey -- I know he's a Jewish Buddhist, but some interesting words in some of his songs (the Jesus verse in 'Suzanne' in particular, and his 'Who By Fire' song)
Hi Andrew,
It's Adam here, Megan du Toit's twin brother. I think I posted without explaining who I was last time - sorry!
how funny -- I was just aimlessly going from blog to blog and found another post on Cohen's Hallelujah -- from some Brisbane theology brain-box, Benjamin Myers. Anyway, that's where you might've got the piccie from Andrew? I'd assumed it was a picture of what Cohen looks like these days, but if I read things properly, it's a portrait of Karl Barth! Not dissimilar looking!
The Ben bloke had a link to another blogger who'd posted a great piece on Cohen - pasted below if you're interested

oh, and Megan -- if you ever preach that service -- make sure it's podcast, I'd love to hear it! :)
thanks for your comments guys. Good to hear from you Adam!
Yes, I did get that picture from Ben's site - I often read his thoughts (even though I don't always understand them!).
Glad to hear of your Christian faith!
oh good, I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels a bit sloooow sometimes, trying to understand Ben's blog!
Love the song. It's a really good insight into love, meaning, searching, loneliness etc. You could spend a great deal of time discussing it!
My favourite version is still Jeff Buckley's.
